The Lake District is an incredible place for a fantastic summer holiday and it isn’t just for those who want to spend their holidays walking. There are plenty of family-friendly activities to take part in that make it a really great destination for all types of people.
Let’s take a look at some of the things that you can do whatever the weather, during a break in the Lake District.
The World of Beatrix Potter
Whilst Beatrix Potter may have penned her famous stories about the mischievous Peter Rabbit in 1893, they have stood the test of time and children of all ages are still drawn to her characters. The World of Beatrix Potter in Bowness-on-Windermere is a fantastic family-friendly place to visit and a good choice for a rainy day. Take the chance to walk through the living village and see all of the characters. There are also special events held during the year, so you may want to look out for those as well.
Wray Castle
Just across the water from the Windermere Lake launch point is Wray Castle, a National Trust Historic site that makes a great family day out. This Victorian Era Castle, built using a neo-Gothic design is a little different from other National Trust properties. Gone are the artworks and furniture you might expect to see. They have been replaced with period dress-up, giant games and soft play. There are plenty of activities both indoor and outdoor making this a good choice whatever the weather.
Brockhole on Windermere
On a nice day Brockhole on Windermere is a great place to visit with plenty of outdoor activities for children of all ages. You can try anything from tree top climbing to mini golf, nature trails to paddle boarding. If the rain does drive you indoors then you will also find a visitors centre and a museum, cafés and a restaurant to occupy your time. And if you just want a gentle stroll to lull the smallest members of your family to sleep for a well deserved nap then the gardens at Brockhole are spectacular and well worth a visit.
Lakes Aquarium
Located on the shores of Lake Windermere, you will find what is purported to be one of the largest freshwater fish and aquatic create collections in the UK. There are plenty of things to see and the underwater tunnel is a particular hit with younger visitors. From clownfish to sea turtles and otters this is a great family place to visit.
A Freedom of the Lake – Lakes Aquarium ticket will allow you to combine a cruise on Lake Windermere with a visit to the Aquarium for a slightly reduced cost.
Grizedale Forest
If you are looking for outdoor activities to fill several days, then Grizedale Forest is the perfect location. There are 10 walking trails and 9 cycling trails just waiting to be explored. The challenging mountain bike trails have some challenges and onsite art installations to break up the activity. There is an adventure playground for younger visitors and for those children over the age of 6, the Grizedale Go Ape treetop rope course offers some real adventure. There is a café on site serving snacks and off course that all-important ice cream.
Derwent Pencil Museum
If you find yourself in Keswick and looking for something a little different to do on a rainy day, then the Derwent Pencil Museum is a great place to spend a few hours. They often hold drawing demonstrations and activities for kids as well, which are plenty of fun particularly if your children enjoy art.
