Are you on the search for the best things to do in the Gili Islands?
Within the pristine waters of the Indonesian archipelago, the Gili Islands call travelers from far and wide seeking a heavenly getaway. These three beautiful islands, Gili Trawangan, Gili Air, and Gili Meno – offer a perfect mix of relaxation and adventure.
With their soft white sand beaches, enchanting underwater worlds, and a serene island ambiance, the Gili Islands promise an escape from the ordinary.
Beyond their breathtaking natural beauty, the Gili Islands have a unique cultural charm. Where tradition and modernity intersect to create an experience worth remembering.
My name is Luca, I am 18 years old and the writer behind the youth travel blog ‘Hello World, Here I Come‘. And in June 2023 I traveled to the idyllic archipelago.
And after a brilliant trip, I’ve created an insider’s guide to the top 10+ things to do in the Gili Islands. Whether you’re a thrill-seeker or a sun-soaker, these islands have a treasure trove of experiences in store.
1. Hire a private boat and go snorkeling

Renting a private boat for snorkeling in the Gili Islands is the ultimate way to explore the pristine waters at a casual pace. Tourist boats are commonly packed to the brim. While with private boats you can explore the magical underwater world in peace.
You’ll make stops at secluded snorkeling spots known mainly to locals, where sea turtles regularly drift by. What sets this experience apart is the flexibility it offers; you get to set your own pace, linger at your favorite snorkeling sites, and maybe even enjoy a lunchtime picnic on an undiscovered stretch of shoreline.
Tours can be found all along the beachfront, with a private boat going for AUD $50-80 for a 5-hour tour. It is standard for boats to provide snorkeling equipment, and accommodate parties of up to 8 people. Our favourite place to stop was undoubtedly the waters of Gili Meno.
Note: While snorkeling off the islands is an unforgettable experience, there are some unique safety issues you should be aware of. Which you can read about it in my 2023 Gili Islands Safety Guide.
2. Go to a Reggae bar
Everyone knows Gili Trawangan as Gili’s party island. And it’s a fair characterization. But even if you aren’t all about nights out, there are still some awesome spots to go.
If you’re seeking laid-back vibes and an unforgettable evening on Gili Trawangan, look no further than Sama Sama Reggae Bar. This place is all about good vibes, island charm, and great music.
Whether you’re a reggae enthusiast or just looking for a unique island experience, Sama Sama Reggae Bar should be at the top of your Gili Trawangan to-do list. It’s the perfect place to unwind and enjoy some live music.
From 10 pm the Sama Sama becomes a real party. But if that’s not your jam you can always head out and turn right, straight towards the Gili Trawangan night markets.
3. Eat at the local Gili Trawangan night markets
The best (and cheapest) food on the Gili islands comes from the bustling Gili T night market. The market opens around 8 pm, with 15+ stalls serving up everything from Indonesian classics, to whole fish grilled in front of your eyes.
With local Indonesian island food and an electric atmosphere, the night markets are a must-do experience for any foodies. Located on the main street and open from 7 p.m. into the early hours of the morning, the markets are a tasty and convenient stop for your island exploration.
4. Catch a sunset

Sunsets on the Gili Islands are some of the best in the world. I can go so far as to say that they are the best I have ever seen. As the sun turns a vibrant red and sinks below the horizon, a shimmering mirage of orange, red, blue, pink, and yellow sinks in. Framed by the silhouettes of mountains on Bali and Lombok.
The best places on each island to watch the sunset are as follows:
- Gili Trawangan:
- Sunset Swing at Ombak Sunset: This iconic swing on the western side of the island offers a perfect view of the sunset over the sea.
- Sunset Beach: This long stretch of coastline on the southwest of the island is the perfect to watch a magical sunset on Gili Trawangan.
- Gili Air:
- Mowies on the Beach: Known for its vibrant atmosphere, Mowies offers beachfront seating where you can enjoy a stunning sunset along with live music.
- Sunset Point: This hill on the east side of the island offers panoramic views of both sunrise and sunset.
- Gili Meno:
- Meno’s Sunset Swing: Similar to Gili Trawangan, Meno also has its famous sunset swing found on Karma Beach.
- Northwest Beach: The entire northwest coast of Gili Meno provides beautiful sunset views with fewer crowds.
5. Go to One of the 12 Secret Gili’s

Hidden away from the noise of the main 3 Gili Islands, the “Secret Gili Islands,” are a group of 12 tiny islets scattered around the area. They offer an even quieter and more authentic escape.
These lesser-known islands have untouched beaches, and vibrant coral reefs, and are honestly a hidden paradise. Many people traveling to the Gili’s don’t even know these islands exist, leaving them as the best-kept secrets of the Gili archipelago.
Gili Nanggu, Gili Kedis, Gili Tangdok, and Gili Sudak, are four that are more commonly known.
6. Go to an Open-air Cinema
The outdoor cinemas on the Gili islands are the perfect nighttime activity. The beaches and sunsets also make it easy for travelers to create videos that capture their favorite moments from the trip. You can enjoy your favorite film while still soaking up the ambiance of the island.
They can be found mostly on Gili Trawangan and Gili Air. And play a range of new and old movies of every genre.
So, whether you’re on a romantic getaway or having an amazing time with friends, these open-air cinemas make your nights on the Gili Islands as incredible as your sun-soaked days.
7. Ride Bicycles Around the Island
When exploring the Gili Islands, a bicycle isn’t just a mode of transportation. It’s an adventure in itself, and arguably the best way to soak up the island’s charm.
Picture yourself pedaling along sandy paths, with the shimmering ocean just a stone’s throw away.
Riding a bike here is the way to enjoy the Islands to their fullest, where there are no motorized vehicles to disturb the tranquillity. You’ll have the freedom to stop at quiet beaches, hidden gems, and charming beachfront cafes.
8. Visit the Turtle Sanctuary on Gili Meno

If you’re planning a visit to Gili Meno (which is highly recommended), don’t miss the opportunity to experience its Turtle Sanctuary.
Located on the southeastern coast of the island, this sanctuary serves as a haven for the protection of these lovely sea creatures. And while you can swim with the turtles on the island, you can also witness firsthand the work of conservationists in rehabilitating those who are injured.
The entry cost is typically quite affordable, with donations greatly appreciated to support their work. The Turtle Sanctuary on Gili Meno is usually open to visitors daily. With hours varying slightly, so it’s a good idea to check the latest times during your visit.
And the best part of the visit is the opportunity to help release rehabilitated turtles back into the wild. It’s such a heartwarming experience and is sure to make your time on the island even more memorable!
9. Go Island Hopping

All along the beachfront, you will find booths selling tours and boat rides from island to island. Island hopping is the perfect way to spend a day in the Gili’s.
Hop on one of the hundreds of boats and cross the waters between each island every day. Usually at a very affordable price, Around $5-10 AUD. Then from there explore everything that the three Gili Islands have to offer.
Around every corner, there is a new experience, a new place to explore, and a new hidden gem to be discovered!
My experience of island hopping was one of the best things I did on my trip. And it is one reason why I regularly recommend visiting the islands over more popular destinations like Bali.
My post titled, ‘Is Bali Overrated?’, gives more insight into why visiting the Gili’s (and its neighbouring island of Lombok) are a much more enjoyable way of experiencing Indonesia.
10. Shop at the Local Boutiques
When it comes to shopping on the Gili Islands, Gili Air stands out for unique boutiques and local finds. There, you can find an array of locally owned shops selling everything from handwoven sarongs to intricately designed silver jewelry.
The boutiques on Gili Air showcase the talent and craftsmanship of local artists, and supporting a local shop contributes directly to the island’s economy and support of its inhabitants.
11. Just Relax!
And most importantly, just relax! In the Gili Islands, sometimes the best thing to do is nothing at all.
The islands are a sanctuary for those seeking a detox from everyday life. It’s a place where you can savor each sunset, float in the crystal-clear waters, and indulge in delicious local cosine.
So, if you’re wondering how to experience the Gili Islands at their finest, remember that sometimes the most incredible experience is simply relaxing, and letting the Islands work their magic.
