Best things to do in Sydney for free

Visit Circular Quay

One of the very best things to do in Sydney is to visit Circular Quay, located at Sydney Cove on Sydney Harbour. It’s a central point in the city and a public transport hub for buses, trains, and ferries. Circular Quay is the perfect place to start exploring Sydney.

From the train platform, there’s a fabulous view of Sydney Harbour. You can see the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Opera House is just around the corner. There are always ferries coming and going from Circular Quay. It’s a busy and fun place to visit and is usually full of people. Grab a coffee or an ice cream, watch the buskers performing, and soak up the bustling atmosphere.

More favorite free things to do in Sydney include taking the lift to the walkway on the Cahill Expressway behind Circular Quay for stunning views over the harbor all the way to the Sydney Opera House. Or walking from Circular Quay around the Harbour Foreshore to the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Sydney Opera House

Sydney’s beautiful Opera House is an extraordinary piece of modern architecture that is famous around the world. Visiting the Sydney Opera House is one of the top things to do in Sydney and should not be missed.  You can walk inside the Sydney Opera House as far as the box office. You’ll see the foyer and the opera house shop for free, but the best views of the Sydney Opera House are from outside anyway.

Wander around the harbor foreshore with your camera, and you’ll get plenty of great opportunities to photograph this unique building. To see inside the performance spaces of the Opera House, you’ll need to buy a concert ticket or join a tour.

Walk across the Sydney Harbour Bridge

The Sydney Harbour Bridge is another iconic landmark in Australia. Joining the north and the south sides of the harbor, the Sydney Harbour Bridge has an extremely photogenic location. Walking across the Sydney Harbour Bridge is completely free and offers some amazing views that won’t cost you a cent.

The bridge walk is 1.5 kilometers long, and it takes around 20 minutes to cross to Milsons Point on the other side of the harbor. There are some great photo opportunities from Jeffries Wharf and a lovely boardwalk that takes you past the colorful entrance to Luna Park and around the harbor to Lavender Bay. Walk back across the bridge or return to Circular Quay by ferry from Milsons Point.

From Circular Quay, you can stroll along the foreshore pathway and walk right underneath the Harbour Bridge. Near the pylon that supports the bridge is a green stretch of grass, and you can relax in the park. Enjoy the stunning harbor views and watch the ferries and boats sailing past as the cars whiz by overhead.

Party at Sydney’s New Year’s Eve Fireworks

The New Years’ Eve Fireworks are a huge free event and one of the best things to do in Sydney. Each year hundreds of thousands of people turn out to welcome the New Year and enjoy the celebrations in Sydney. The parks and walkways beside Sydney harbor are packed with people watching the exciting Fireworks display that lights up Sydney Harbour.

The Harbour Bridge and Opera House are at the center of the event but there are vantage points all around the city. The best spots around the harbor fill up days ahead with people on picnic blankets reserving their place for the evening show. At 9:00 PM, there’s a smaller show, and at midnight, Sydney welcomes in the New Year in a spectacular way. Don’t miss the New Year’s Eve Fireworks if you’re in Sydney at the end of December.

Watch the sunset in the Sydney Botanical Gardens

One of the most delightful things to do in Sydney is to walk along the harbor side pathway past the Opera House to the Sydney Botanical Gardens, once the grounds of Old Government House.

View from Sydney Botanic Gardens

Wander through the lovely gardens and stop for a picnic on the lawn. At Mrs. Macquarie’s Chair, you’ll enjoy one of Sydney’s most spectacular views. This spot is amazing at any time of day, but it’s at its best around sunset when you can watch the sun disappearing behind the Sydney Opera House with the harbor bridge behind it. It’s one of the best sunset spots in Sydney and a great place to take an iconic Sydney photo.

Discover The Rocks on a self-guided walking tour

The Rocks
The Rocks

One of the most fun and educational things to do in Sydney is to visit the oldest part of town. The Rocks is just a short walk from Circular Quay, and a self-guided walk will take you past heritage buildings like tiny Cadman’s Cottage and Susannah Place.

There’s a free museum at Susannah Place, and you can see inside the historic house and see how the early settlers in Australia lived. Nearby you can stroll through the cobblestone laneways of the Suez Canal, and the Nurses walk and visit the convict-hewn Argyle Cut near the Sydney Observatory.

Stop for lunch or a coffee at The Rocks Square, or call in at one of Sydney’s oldest Pubs for a beer and a meal. Learn about the history of the area at The Rocks Discovery Museum. Entry is free.

On weekends in The Rocks, there’s an art & craft market that’s free to browse, and Australian artwork is on display at the Argyle Galleries in The Rocks.

Spending a day at Bondi Beach is one of the most popular things to do in Sydney. Join the locals in swimming or surfing, and you’ll get a taste of Sydney’s laid-back surf scene. If you wander along Bondi Beach, you’ll come to a tidal rock pool that’s perfect for a dip, and you can grab a drink or a meal at the Bondi Iceberg’s club on the hill.

**Make sure you wear strong (50+) sunscreen and swim between the flags at Bondi Beach.

On weekends there’s a free live music show featuring Australian musicians at the Lamrock Café at Bondi Beach. You can’t beat the beachfront location and the gorgeous views. Visiting Bondi Beach is one of Sydney’s most popular day trips.

Walk the Coastal path from Bondi to Coogee Beach

Keep walking along the coastal path from Bondi Beach past the rock pool and Bondi Iceberg’s Club, and you’ll be on your way to Coogee Beach. This scenic coastal walk is popular with locals and visitors, and it’s one of many fun free things to do in Sydney. There are sweeping ocean views, and it’s a lovely place to be in the early morning to watch the sunrise over the ocean at the beginning of the day.

In October /November, the free “Sculpture by the Sea” event takes over the Bondi to Coogee Coastal path, and it’s a great way to spend an afternoon enjoying quirky artwork with the dramatic coastal scenery as a backdrop.

Catch a ferry to Manly

Catching the ferry to Manly is high on the list of favorite things to do in Sydney. For the price of a ferry ticket, you’ll get a half-hour cruise on the gorgeous Sydney harbor. The Manly ferry leaves from Circular Quay and travels directly past the Sydney Opera House, and there are some great photo opportunities as you leave Circular Quay. So be strategic about where you sit and have your camera ready as soon as the ferry leaves the wharf.

Manly is located on the north side of the harbor, and you’ll feel a bigger swell as you pass the open ocean at the harbor heads. When you arrive in Manly, you can stroll along Manly Corso to the famous Manly Beach to swim and surf. Or you can walk to the north and head for distant city views across the harbor. Manly’s North Head is a lovely place to be at sunset!

Visit the Blue Mountains

One of the most delightful things to do in Sydney is to spend a day (or more) in the beautiful Blue Mountains. If you travel 2 hours west of the city, you’ll find yourself high in the mountains enjoying stunning scenery and wild bushlands. The sweeping views of green, forested valleys and soaring sandstone cliffs will take your breath away.

It takes about 2 hours to travel to Katoomba by train and to reach the viewpoint at Echo Point. You can take a bus or walk. The main attraction here is a unique rock formation in the sandstone cliffs known as the Three Sisters. It’s the most popular view in the Blue Mountains.

From Echo Point, take the Prince Edward Cliff Walk around the cliff tops to Katoomba Falls or hike down the steep stairs into the forests of the Jamieson Valley.  Just remember, it’s a steep and strenuous climb back up to the top. (You can always catch the scenic railway back from the valley floor to the cliff top, but the ride is not free).

There’s a village feel in the Katoomba shopping center and lots of antique shops, gift shops, and cafes to enjoy and browsing doesn’t cost a cent. Here’s where to stay in the Blue Mountains.
