Kyrgyzstan is one of the world’s top up-and-coming destinations, and for good reason! With high mountain ranges, hundreds of stunning alpine lakes, and lush, green summer pastures, the country is literally brimming with beautiful places. Add to this a fascinating nomad culture and thousands of years of history, and you’ve got one amazing place to visit.
We’ve spent a lot of time exploring this wonderful Central Asian nation, going above and beyond to find the best and most beautiful places the country has to offer. We’ve explored multiple mountain ranges, conquered numerous high mountain passes, and gone way off the beaten track to discover the best Kyrgyzstan has to offer.

Ala Kul Lake
Ala Kul Lake is one of the most beautiful places in Kyrgyzstan, as well as the most popular trekking destination in the country. It’s still Kyrgyzstan though, so it’s not that famous (yet!).
Ala Kul is a rock-dammed lake in the Terskey Alatau range of northeast Kyrgyzstan. The water is the most mesmerizing shade of teal that changes with the sun. The lake is fringed by high, snow-capped mountains that provide a dramatic backdrop for this already dramatic lake.
Ala Kul Lake sits at 3600m in the Karakol Nature Park, just outside of the small city of Karakol. Just because it’s not far from Karakol doesn’t mean you can get there easily though! It requires at least a full day’s hiking, including climbing an arduous 3800m mountain pass. Most people, however, opt for a scenic, 3-day circuit. Whichever route you choose, it’s a very tough climb, but once you see these views, you’ll be glad you did it.
Be sure to pair your visit with a stop at Altyn-Arashan Hot Springs – nothing feels better after a big trek in the mountains than a nice long soak in some hot springs!
Issyk Kul Lake
Issyk Kul Lake is the largest lake in Kyrgyzstan and also the 10th largest in the world (and the 7th deepest).
The name Issyk Kul means ‘warm lake’ in Kyrgyz because it doesn’t freeze in winter. I wouldn’t call it warm by any means, though, as it’s quite cold – but still worth a swim!
It’s a favorite Kyrgyz holiday spot, with nice beaches on both the north and south shores. The north shore has warmer water and sandier beaches and is home to holiday resorts, while the south shore is more backpacker-focused and closer to the Terskey Alatau Mountains. If you want to do some trekking while you’re in the area, you should base yourself on the southern side of the lake. The small town of Bokonbayevo has some cute guesthouse options and is a good place to stay to explore the area.
There’s even an international music festival held on the shores of Issyk-Kul Lake each year. Kol-Fest is a fun and vibrant 3-day event in July and features cultural performances and musicians and DJs from around the world. I personally attended in 2022 and had a great time!

Kel Suu Lake
You’ve probably now figured out that Kyrgyzstan is the land of incredible lakes and Kel Suu Lake has to be one of the most stunning. Bold words, I know, but I stand by them.
Kel Suu Lake is a remote alpine lake nestled between sharp cliffs and snow-capped mountains in the At-Bashy District. It’s so isolated that it takes a half-day 4×4 drive and then a further 2 – 3 hour walk along the breathtaking Kok Kiya Valley just to reach it.
Once you’re there, you can relax at the lake, ride a horse or even take a short boat ride on the lake.
The lake stretches almost 10 km and is very close to the Chinese border. So close, in fact, that it requires a special permit just to get there.
Due to the difficulty in getting to Kel Suu Lake, it sees relatively little traffic and is one of Kyrgyzstan’s hidden gems, meaning you won’t have to share the space with many other tourists.
There’s no reception at Kel Suu Lake and very few facilities, but hey, with a place this beautiful, what more do you really need?
Tash Rabat
Despite being on the Silk Road, Kyrgyzstan doesn’t have many ancient sites left. That’s what makes Tash Rabat so special and puts it on the list of the most beautiful places in Kyrgyzstan.
Tash Rabat is a 15th-century stone caravanserai hidden in the hills near China. It sits at 3000m elevation, is pretty isolated, and requires some planning to get there. But Tash Rabat’s isolation only enhances its beauty.
Once you get there, you can explore Tash Rabat inside, outside, and even on top! It’s a fun experience to walk around the roof and admire the rolling hills on which it is set.
You can stay the night at one of the many yurt camps, which allows you to explore the caravanserai at sunset. The colors at this time are simply magical.
A bonus of visiting Tash Rabat is that you can hike or horse trek to Chatyr Kol Pass, a high mountain pass overlooking Chatyr Kol lake and into China. If you’re feeling really ambitious, you can actually trek down to the lake itself and camp there, but you’ll need to be fit and self-sufficient as this is a truly adventurous option.
Kol Tor Lake
Yet another beautiful lake in Kyrgyzstan!
Kol Tor Lake is a milky, aquamarine lake in the Kegeti Valley, just a couple of hours from Kyrgyzstan’s capital, Bishkek. The lake’s color is so surreal that you won’t believe it until you see it with your own eyes. When you see this place, you’ll understand why this is one of the most beautiful places in Kyrgyzstan.
The color comes from flowing glacial sediment and can change dramatically from baby blue to light teal green. Just beyond the lake is another stunning alpine valley, which you can wander up as you wish.
Kol Tor Lake is most popularly visited as a day hike as it’s an easy 5 – 6 hour round trip hike. For those wanting a bit more time at Kol Tor Lake, however, there are plenty of great spots for camping – and don’t be surprised if you have the entire place to yourself.
Sary Chelek
Sary Chelek is one of Kyrgyzstan’s least-known lakes but arguably one of its most beautiful.
The lake is part of a larger area called Sary-Chelek Nature Reserve. It’s designated as a UNESCO biosphere due to its incredible biodiversity. It’s home to more than 1,000 different plants and rare mammals such as bears and lynx. Don’t be afraid, though, as it’s highly unlikely you’ll come across anything that could hurt you.
There are about five smaller lakes within the reserve, but the main one is significantly larger and where the majority of visitors spend their time.
The altitude of the lake is only about 2000 meters high – still high, but after spending time anywhere else in Kyrgyzstan, this feels low!
Lenin Peak
Smack bang on the border with Tajikistan, Lenin Peak (7134m) is part of the Pamir Mountains, the most striking and unique mountain range we’ve ever laid eyes on. Out of all of the beautiful places in Kyrgyzstan, it’s hands-down one of our favorites.
Permanently snowcapped, Lenin Peak is one of Kyrgyzstan’s most iconic features. It’s also the world’s most accessible 7000m+ mountain, so it attracts peak baggers the world over.
If you don’t feel like a 21-day expedition, don’t worry, it’s a relatively easy hike to Lenin Peak Base Camp, where you’re still afforded incredible views of the multi-colored Pamir Mountains. While you’re there, be sure to explore Tulparkul Lake, yet another stunning alpine lake in Kyrgyzstan (I told you there’s a lot!).
Arslanbob
Although Kyrgyzstan has a lot of mountains, Arslanbob, situated between the Fergana and Chatkal Mountain Ranges in the west, is quite distinct from all the others. This is due to its 11,000-hectare walnut forest, the largest in the world.
The town itself is tiny, and you can stay in cozy homestays, giving you a unique insight into life here. For such a small village there’s plenty to do, with waterfalls, hiking trails, and ancient tombs to explore. There’s also an annual walnut harvest in late September or early October, with celebrations galore.

Song Kul Lake
Song Kul Lake is a very special place: not only is it definitely one of the most beautiful places in Kyrgyzstan, but it’s the most popular place to go on the most Kyrgyz activity – a horse trek. The lake is beautiful, but it’s the adventure of getting there that makes this such an incredible destination.
You can horse trek to Song Kol lake in anywhere from 1 – 3 days, visiting a number of beautiful places along the way. Hold on tight because you’ll go over at least 1 high mountain pass to get there.
When you get to get to Song Kul, be sure to stay in a yurt camp along the shore. Dozens of shepherd families set up for the summer along the banks of the lake, and getting to interact with them is a wonderful cultural experience. Try a drink of kumis (fermented horse milk) while you’re there – this is a local delicacy that, ummm, well, takes some getting used to. Plug your nose and lean into it!
Ala Archa National Park
Ala Archa National Park is a national park located in the Tian Shan mountains, just 35 km from Bishkek. Defined by its striking gorge, the name ‘Ala Archa’ refers to the abundant juniper trees that can be found all around the park.
What makes this such a beautiful place in Kyrgyzstan is the spectacular scenery, with plenty of varied options for hiking and picnicking. On summer weekends, it can get quite busy with Kyrgyz families, but this only adds to its charm. If you’re lucky, you may even be invited for a cup of tea with one.
From Bishkek, it’s easy to visit as a day trip, but if you want to extend your stay, there are options (both camping and lodges) to stay overnight. Plus, you can visit in both winter and summer, making this a truly excellent year-round destination.
